The Illinois Technology Association: A Catalyst for Regional Innovation

For more than a decade, the Illinois Technology Association (ITA) functioned as the central nervous system of the Chicago-area technology ecosystem. Founded to support scaling technology companies—those experiencing rapid growth and operational expansion—the ITA provided essential resources, visibility, and networking infrastructure necessary for global competitiveness. The organization played a pivotal role in establishing the Midwest as a credible alternative to traditional coastal technology hubs.

The ITA concentrated on addressing the unique needs of growth-stage companies—businesses that have surpassed the startup phase but have not yet reached the scale of large corporations. This merger combined the ITA’s focus on scaling growth-stage companies with 1871’s expertise in early-stage incubation.

Today, the legacy of the ITA persists through the robust infrastructure it helped build. The association was instrumental in shifting Illinois’s perception from a traditional manufacturing and agricultural center to a modern powerhouse of financial technology, logistics software, and data analytics. One notable example of its impact is the rise of companies like Sprout Social, a prominent social media management platform that participated in ITA programs during its early stages and has since become one of Chicago’s tech success stories, going public in 2019. Events such as the CityLIGHTS Awards also provided startups like Grubhub with critical exposure, which ultimately transformed the online food delivery sector. The ITA’s influence remains visible in the continued success of the Chicago tech corridor and the collaborative spirit of the Midwest’s innovation economy.
